Who is the Divine Council in Psalm 82?

This weekend, I swatted at a hornets’ nest by making a statement about Michael Heiser’s Unseen Realm and Divine Council theory after seeing yet another webinar from Logos where someone was diving into his teachings. Here’s what I said: “Heiser’s The Unseen Realm and Divine Council theory are largely unbiblical and are dangerously close to henotheism even though he strongly asserted that he held to trinitarian monotheism. It also undermines God’s impassibility by suggesting that God’s actions are influenced by the council.” I want to look at one passage in particular and a few others indirectly and present an exegetical case for the divine council or assembly, or congregation of God in Psalm 82:1 and demonstrate that these are mortal men, human rulers, who are to serve as an extension of divine authority, not divine actors themselves. After I exegete Psalm 82, I will defend my position by showing that my understanding is consistent with Jesus’ own interpretation of this passage. I will also look at other passages where the word elohim is used to refer to entities apart from God himself and demonstrate that my interpretation, or rather Jesus’ interpretation, is consistent with all of scripture.
