Today I want to cover the importance of understanding different atonement theories and especially Penal Substitutionary Atonement as a prerequisite for comprehending the Calvinist’s understanding of Limited Atonement. In the last video in my Calvinism series, I said that most of the disagreement towards the Limited Atonement doctrine of Calvinism is rooted in differing views about the value, intent, and extent of the atonement. If you don’t believe that Christ’s death was a Penal Substitutionary Atonement or PSA, you are naturally going to reject Calvinism’s doctrine of Limited Atonement. In support of that theory, We need to understand the various atonement theories throughout Church history to see how the Calvinist view developed and how it aligns with other views of the last 2,000 years. You may be tempted to bail early on this video, but I strongly encourage you to stick around. This video is vastly important when it comes to defining the terms and understanding how such a thought can even develop. If you skip this important topic, you may never fully appreciate the doctrine of Limited Atonement as a Calvinist. Likewise if you are opposed to Calvinism or on the fence about Limited Atonement, this should help you steel-man your position. While I am a Calvinist, I remind you that I will go to great lengths to accurately represent the best arguments my opponents have to offer. And it is my sincere hope that those who disagree with me will offer the same, and that all our engagements will be charitable.
